Merino wool and why we love it
Can you be wet and still warm?
Can you be hot but not soaked?
In 30 degree weather? While waiting for a start?
Can you sweat through a fall workout and not get chilled at the end?
Sitting at the Green mountain head start, 40 degrees, pelting rain, shivering while waiting for the go was the beginning of our search for a better product.
Research and advice from other athletes brought us to merino wool. But before your childhood scratchy wool torture sessions come flooding back, this is not your father’s sweater. Merino wool has changed. This is superfine, soft as cashmere and very light.
New Zealand merino sheep are treated to a spa like program to guarantee that their fleece has just the perfect kink and texture. This is a high performance fabric, with tremendous stretch and recovery that outperforms synthetics in every way. It's smooth hand enhances softness and layers with ease. This superfine fabric is sustainable, does not trap odor, and is machine washable.
We rowed with it in the cold months of our Connecticut winter and found that we were warm, sometimes sweaty, but never clammy or chilled. Merino wool will trap body heat with the naturally crimped fibers while drawing moisture away from the skin where it can evaporate, keeping your temperature steady. We also tested these great wool pieces in 90 degree heat. It is truly amazing. Merino wool is a breathable insulator, light as a feather to wear.
In addition, merino has natural stretch and recovery (that kinky wool again), so that it fits close and well, without binding or constraining .
