Buzz Congram

 

In 2001, upon his retirement as Men’s varsity heavyweight crew coach for 23 years, Buzz was inducted into the Northeastern University Athletic Hall of Fame.

During his tenure, Northeastern varsity crews advanced to the Grand Finals of the Eastern Sprints 14 times, winning two bronze and two silver medals. At the IRA, five bronze medals, one silver, and two gold medals. At the Cincinnati Regatta, (From 1982 – 1985, considered the National Collegiate Championship) Northeastern won silver in 1988 and 1991 and bronze in ’89 and ’95.In 1988, Buzz was honored as the EARC “Coach of the Year”.

From 2003 to 2005, Buzz came out of retirement to serve as the first “full time” Women’s Varsity Lightweight Crew Coach and followed that with one year as interim Men’s Varsity Heavyweight Coach for the 2005- 2006 season.

Buzz began his coaching career at his Alma Mater, Columbia, coaching the freshman lightweight and heavyweight crews for three years, and then spending five and seven years as freshman heavyweight coach at Rutgers and Yale respectively.

On the World Championship level Buzz coached several crews: 1975 Men’s Lightweight Four without Cox, Nottingham, England, 4th place, 1976 Men’s Lightweight Eight, Villach, Austria, Bronze medal, 1983 Women’s Four with Cox, Lucerne, Switzerland, Silver medal. 1993 U.S. Men’s Pair with Cox, Racice, Czechoslovakia. 1994 U.S. Men’s Pair with and Pair w/o Cox, World Championships, Indianapolis, IN.

 Buzz has retired from full time collegiate coaching and is living in North Pomfret, VT with his wife, Aina, and seven year old daughter, Sofia. His son Will is in his second year as the boy’s novice crew coach at Community Rowing in Boston.
